Peter Steer

It is with great sadness that I have to inform you of the passing of Peter Steer, who died peacefully at the Royal Derby Hospital on Tuesday 27th October, following a short illness.

Peter’s passing is a tremendous loss to Derby Civic Society and to the wider city of Derby, where he was so well known and respected for his knowledge, enthusiasm and unwavering commitment to protecting our local heritage.

Peter was an enormous character, possessing a wealth of knowledge, experience and stories that would leave you unable to stop laughing. Some of his tales were so extraordinary that you could hardly believe they had happened, but that was part of Peter’s unique charm. Whenever you met him, he would greet you with that wonderful smile, already ready to take on the next challenge.

He was passionate about Derby and never afraid to stand up for what he believed was right, whether challenging Derby City Council over planning matters or campaigning to protect the city’s historic buildings and character.

His absence around our committee table will be deeply felt. His extensive knowledge of conservation, heritage, engineering and architectural design was invaluable, and his determination, insight and willingness to speak up will be greatly missed by us all.

Peter was much more than a knowledgeable and committed member of our community; he was a friend, a character and someone who made a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know him.

Peter will be very sadly missed, but his contribution to Derby and its heritage, along with the many memories he leaves behind, will not be forgotten.
